The excitation of the isomeric level /sup 235m/U (73 eV, 26 min) in a laser-heated plasma by inverse internal electron conversion, which was predicted by Gol'danskii and Namiot )Pis'ma Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 23, 495 (1976) (JETP Lett. 23, 451 (1976)); Phys. Lett. 62B, 393 (1976)) and observed experimentally by Izawa and Yamanaka (Phys. Lett. 88B, 59 (1979)), does not require that the energies of the nuclear isomeric and intershell electron transitions be approximately equal. This excitation results from the capture of electrons from the continuum to an outer shell. This conclusion substantially extends the occurrence of inverse internal electron conversion and raises the possibility, in particular, of pumping many Moessbauer levels with an energy Qroughly-equal1--100 keV in plasmas produced and heated by laser, electron, or ion beams.
