Vertical gas electrode operation

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6460730

An apparatus is described for equalizing varying gas and liquid electrolyte interface pressures within the pores of a vertically positioned, porous gas electrode in an electrolytic cell, comprising: a porous, vertical gas electrode, sectioned into laterally disposed horizontal compartment down its vertical length and adapted to separate the cell into a gas zone and a liquid electrolyte zone. Each of the horizontal compartment is separately connectable to a source of gas; and a weir system comprising a plurality of vertical chambers each with an overflow weir, each of the chamber being connected by a conduit to a separate one of the compartments, the weir of each chamber being at a height to provide a fluid head within its chamber to substantially balance the fluid head of the liquid electrolyte exerted on the compartment to which the chamber is connected.
