Conversion of gas/oil fired packaged boilers to micronized coal firing

In the past five years, a diverse group of engineers, coal companies, fuel institutes, utilities, and manufacturers of boilers and mills have proven the functional capabilities of micronized coal in installations ranging from asphalt plants to utility boilers. Based upon these studies and the authors' own testing, they confirm the following facts: Micronized coal is short and intense like and oil flame, Carbon burnout exceeds 99%, Combustion intensity is in excess of 90,000 Btu/cf, Radiant heat flux is considerably higher, and Ash deposition and ash furnace settling can be handled with conventional soot blowers. The primary obstacle to a large number of micronized coal fired installations has been capital and operating costs of the mill equipment. Centrifugal pneumatic technology has not been in the field long enough to ascertain all impending problems, but the initial operating data suggests that capital and operating costs are very favorable in today's economy with low gas and oil prices.
