Micronized coal firing boiler facility and potential utility applications

Conference ·
OSTI ID:257002
Micronized coal technology is receiving more attention as a potential start-up fuel in Utility boilers to replace No. 2 oil, as micronized coal flame characteristics are similar to No. 2 oil. Some interest has developed for micronized coal fired boilers for units as large as 600,000 lb/hr steaming rate. If another 1970`s type price escalation occurs for natural gas/No. 2 oil, micronized coal could receive even more scrutiny as a viable alternate start-up fuel. Micronized coal is also suited for industrial size boilers. Other applications for micronized coal include retrofit of stoker fired boilers, use with a diesel combined cycle, and for the reburn fuel zone in applications of Reburn Technology for NO{sub x} control. The purpose of this paper is to present an economic analyses comparing an industrial stoker fired coal boiler system to micronized coal firing for a specific project, and to review potential utility applications. The Owner (State) commissioned the Engineer (SE Technologies) to study a micronized coal fired plant vs a stoker fired boiler plant for the Clearfield State Correctional Facility, in order to identify alternatives to reduce the capital and operating costs of the project. Micronized coal is coal that is ground to a particle size smaller than pulverized coal (20 micron average size verses 60 micron size). The objective of the study was to review the advantages and disadvantages of a micronized vs stoker fired plant, and any special design considerations required for micronized plant design.
