A system using high density polyethylene pipe to line new steel pipe and to reline corroded steel flowlines has proven successful in a 15.5-mile installation at Judy Creek, Alberta, by Esso Resources Canada Ltd. The system is called the Expanded Line System for High Pressure Service. The technique consists of pulling the liner through the steel pipe already in place and using hot water under pressure to expand the polyethylene into a snug fit. The annular space between the steel pipe and liner is vacated of air to eliminate the possibility of vacuum collapse. The steel handles the pressure, and the polyethylene takes care of the corrosion. The pressure rating of the polyethylene alone is a maximum of 200 psi. The lined steel system for produced water injection operates at pressures up to 3000 psi. The reliner program is 50 to 60% of the replacement costs of new steel.
