Plastic liner reinforces flow lines. [Oil pipeline]

Tests were conducted of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe to reline corroded steel flow lines and to line new steel pipe in a 15.5-mile installation at Judy Creek field, Calgary, Alberta. The HDPE liner is pulled through the steel pipe already in place, and hot water under pressure expands the polyethylene into a snug fit. The annular space between the steel pipe and the liner is vacated of air to eliminate the possibility of vacuum collapse. The steel handles the pressure; the polyethylene, the corrosion. Pressure rating of the polyethylene alone is a maximum of 50 psi. The lined steel system for produced water injection operates at pressures up to 3000 psi. Relining costs are 50 to 60% lower than replacement costs of new steel. Installation time is calculated as being half that required for direct burial of a new line. The service life of the liner is expected to be in excess of 20 years. The liner also has eliminated a need for chemicals to reduce or stop corrosion in the steel, and has cut horsepower requirements (for produced-water injection) by 20 to 30%.
