The decomposition of isopropanol over spinal solid solutions MgAl/sub y/Cr/sub x/O/sub 4/, where y = 2 - x, was studied to elucidate the importance of matrix and electronic effects in oxide catalysis. The activities and dehydration and dehydrogenation selectivities were similar to those of chromium/aluminum corundum solid solutions The activity went through a minimum at x = 0.4. The dehydration activity was high at very low and very high chromium contents, and the selectivity for dehydrogenation was high at 5-75% chromium content. The active sites at x < 0.4 were probably electronically isolated, and catalysts with x > 4 had charge mobility. The dehydration to propylene probably occurred on single sites, at low chromium contents on coordinatively unsaturated cations forming strong Lewis acids. Dehydrogenation to acetone occurred on pair sites.
