The relationship between the oxidation activity and the acid-base properties of Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/-based mixed oxides. 1. The Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/-V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ AND Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/-MoO/sub 3/ systems

With increasing vanadium pentoxide content in Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts, the surface area went through a maximum at approx. 10 atom % vanadium; the acidity, as measured by ammonia and pyridine adsorption, increased nearly linearly; the initial isopropanol dehydration rate at 175/sup 0/C varied as the acidity and could be used as an indicator of acidity; the basicity, as measured by carbon dioxide and acetic acid adsorption, decreased rapidly; the ratio of isopropanol dehydrogenation to dehydration followed the basicity curve and can be used as a measure of basicity; the isomerization of 1-butene and 2-butene under oxidative conditions correlated with the acidity; the air oxidation of butadiene to maleic anhydride correlated with acidity and had 40-50% selectivity at total conversion (at high vanadium content); and the conversion of 1-butene to butadiene at 0.34-1.3 mole % oxygen concentration increased at low vanadium content and then decreased. With increasing MoO/sub 3/ content in Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/, the acidity went through a maximum at 30-40 atom % molybdenum, and isopropanol dehydration, 1-butene iomerization and oxidative dehydrogenation, and butadiene oxidation correlated with acidity.
