Stability of the internal kink mode in a high-. beta. tokamak

The stability of the internal kink mode in a tokamak with a high-..beta.. plasma is analyzed. It is shown in the small-shear approximation that as the plasma pressure is raised, there is a stabilizing effect analogous to that predicted previously for small-scale flute perturbations.
