Electric power supply and demand in North America, 1984-1993

The North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) promotes the reliability and adequacy of bulk power supply through nine regional reliability councils and one affiliate encompassing virtually all of the power systems in the US and Canada. An annual compilation and projection of power supply and demand finds an overall growth in demand average of 2.7% per year to 1993, with demand 29.8% higher than in 1983. Regional growth ranges from 1.8 to 4.0%. The regional projections are generally stronger in the South and Southwest, which is consistent with the population shifts projected for the period. Forecasts for both the US and Canada show a decrease from earlier forecasts of load requirements. Projections of capacity additions by fuel type indicate a net reduction of oil and gas units and an increase of nuclear and hydro capacity. 1 figure, 3 tables.
