Title: Enhanced circulation drill bit

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6450758

This patent describes an enhanced circulation drill bit adapted to be mounted at the end of a drill string for enhancing the removal of drill bit cuttings from the bottom of the borehole drilled, comprising: a drill body having a first body section adapted to be attached to a drill string and a second body section having mounted therewith a plurality of cone-type cutter; the first body section having a bore adapted to be in fluid communication with the bore of the drill string to receive drilling fluid flowing downwardly through drill string; the second body section having at least two passageways. Each of the passageways has a first and a second end opening. The passageways are in fluid communication with the bore of the first body section at the first end opening and the passageways extend through the second body section to a second end opening: flow response means mounted in first body section bore for intermittently opening and closing the passageways in response to the flow of fluid entering the upper body section bore in order to intermittently deliver concentrated high velocity flow outwardly of the second end of a passageway to the end of the borehole. This increases jet impact force and enhances cross circulation and removal of drill bit cuttings; the flow response means includes rotation mounted with the first body section bore for rotating therein in response to fluid entering; and pressure surge reflection means mounted with the bore of the first body section for substantially utilizing at least a portion of pressure surges within the bore created by a flow blocking means. This intermittently blocks flow to the passageways.
