Replacement of the present sub-peak plasma density profile by a unique expression

It is proposed that Booker's (1977) skeleton description, which is now used in the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) for the topside, be applied to the bottomside as well. It is pointed out, however, that in order to surmount certain disadvantages, a slightly more involved descriptive function must be applied to the time- and location-dependent parameters. These can be determined by fitting methods, as was done earlier for the topside, and they need be determined only once. To avoid interference between different height ranges, especially between the ranges of the lower, middle and topside ionosphere, it is proposed that independent descriptions in these ranges be used and that they be smoothly connected by filter functions. In this way, a unique analytical expression covering all heights can be obtained.
