Chlorophenols constitute a significant category of pollutants produced on a large scale. The white rot basidiomycetous fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium is capable of effectively degrading polymeric lignin and lignin model compounds. This reports examines the biodegradation of the priority pollutant 2,4,4-trichlorophenol by P. chrysosporium. The involvement of lignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase, and quinone reduction in this degradative pathway is demonstrated. 36 refs., 4 figs., 2 tabs.
