The experimental work and results of a six month program whose objective was the laboratory demonstration of a conductively cooled Nd:YAG laser with a cw, TEM sub 00 mode output of 1 watt for less than 300 watts input are described. The laser was pumped with a K-Rb lamp and employed conductive cooling. To reject the unwanted infrared lamp radiation, the elliptical pump cavity employed a dielectric mirror which selectively reflected the pump radiation and transmitted longer wavelengths. Efficient TEM sub 00 mode conversion was obtained with a tilted intracavity lens, which was anti-reflection coated at 1.06 micrometers. Since the lamp's Nb end seals had to be protected, the pump cavity and lamp supports were located in an enclosure filled with ultra-high purity argon. For 300 watts input to the lamp, the laser produced 1.85 watts multimode, and 0.73 watts in the TEM sub 00 model.
