Production of charm particles in proton-emulsion interactions at 400 GeV/c

A total of 12 three-prong charm candidates have been recorded by following secondaries to one mm length in a total of 2500 proton-emulsion interactions at 400 GeV/c. The estimated background is 4. The signal implies an observed cross section of 43 +- 20 ..mu..b/nucleon. Attributing this to ..lambda../sub c//sup +/, we obtain 120 +- 55 ..mu..b/nucleon for production cross section of ..lambda../sub c//sup +/. Five associated events were also recorded.
