As a result of scanning the neighborhood up to 1000 ..mu..m of 1120 stars produced in nuclear emulsion by 400 GeV/c protons, 9 secondary events were singled out after a careful analysis, that were interpreted as cases of charmed particle decay. The mass values of the decaying particles agree with this interpretation. All decays occurred at distances not exceeding 100 ..mu..m from the vertex of the primary star. An estimate of the lifetime of the decaying particles gave a value of 1.5 x 10/sup -14/ sec. The cross section per nucleon for charmed particle production according to this experiment is 120 ..mu..b.
