Exxon Corp. brought its Baytown, Tex., Exxon Donor Solvent (EDS) coal liquefaction pilot plant on stream 6/24/80. The plant, currently processing 100 tons/day of No. 6 bituminous coal, might soon increase production to the 250 ton/day design capacity, which would produce 650 bbl/day of liquids. The process produces about 2.5 bbl of liquid products per ton of dry Illinois bituminous coal and is scheduled for commercial readiness by late 1982. A $45.6 million program to develop Exxon's Flexicoking process in Baytown for processing residues from the EDS coal liquefaction process will be funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (50%), Exxon Co. U.S.A. (37.5%), Japan Coal Liquefaction Development Co. (8.3%), and Ruhrkohle A.G. (2.1%). The refurbishing of the Flexicoking prototype unit is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 1982, with test and evaluation work running through 1983. Commercial production might start in 1990.
