Constraints on decaying right-handed Majorana neutrinos from SN 1987A observations

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. D; (United States)
We show that recently derived limits on the strength of right-handed interactions from SN 1987A observations hold even in the presence of mixing between left- and right-handed Majorana neutrinos and combined with cosmology lead to a strong bound on this neutrino mixing. By supplementing this with bounds on the flux of 512-keV x rays we are able to extend the bound on the left-right mixing parameter zeta further. In the conventional ''seesaw'' picture, the above results imply that the right-handed Majorana neutrino in left-right-symmetric theories must be heavier than 100 MeV or lighter than 65 eV. We then show that, using the results of neutrinoless double-..beta.. decay, these results rule out m/sub ..nu..//sub >//sub R//sub =/less than or equal to100 MeV without recourse to the seesaw assumption.
