Limits on right-handed interactions from SN 1987A observations. [SN 1987a]

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. D; (United States)
We consider the emission of light (m/sub ..nu..//sub >//sub R//sub =/approx. <10 MeV right-handed neutrinos from supernova 1987A via right-handed charged- and neutral-current interactions. By requiring that the neutronization process e/sub R//sup -/p..--> nu../sub R/n does not carry away most of the energy that can be radiated by the supernova, E/sub T/approx. <(4--5) x 10/sup 53/ ergs, we exclude the range of values for the right-handed W-boson mass, (3.7--6.7)M/sub W//sub >//sub L//sub =/less than or equal toM/sub =/less than or equal to (280--500)M/sub W//sub >//sub L//sub =/ for vanishing W/sub L/-W/sub R/ mixing parameter zeta, and for zetanot =0 we get (0.4--1.2) x 10/sup -5/less than or equal to(zeta/sup 2/+(M/sub =//sup 4/ /M/sub =//sup 4/))/sup 1/2/less than or equal to (0.02--0.07). For right-handed W bosons heavier than 300 M/sub W//sub >//sub L//sub =/, a significant ..nu../sub R/ emission may arise from the neutral-current-induced process e/sup +/e/sup -/..-->..nu-bar/sub R/..nu../sub R/, as well as nn..-->..nn..nu..nu-bar mediated by an extra gauge boson Z'. In this case, for an appropriately defined effective mass M/sub N/ for Z', we find the excluded region (2.4--4.3)M/sub W//sub >//sub L//sub =///sub L//sub =/, mainly dependent on the core temperature and density profile.
