Arctic well completion. Part 5. Designing casing and wellheads for Arctic service

Journal Article · · World Oil; (United States)
OSTI ID:6437799
For normally compacted permafrost (without excess ice) at Prudhoe Bay, operators have found that conventional casing and wellheads are suitable for onshore well completions if certain provisions are met for materials, threads, and seals. To ensure that the casing will withstand various strains and pressures, designers must carefully analyze the strains produced by temperature changes, thaw subsidence, and freezeback loads for each application to determine if the casing strain limits will be exceeded. A description of the various materials available for wellhead casings and seals points out the special considerations required for Arctic applications.
