A hydroelectric boiler system allows Seattle Steam Corp. to take advantage of off-peak energy supply for steam. The utility serves over 600 buildings through more than 17 miles of steam mains. Seattle Steam has a total steam generating capacity of 1,075,000 lbs./h. The electrode high-voltage steam boiler is a 30,000 kW, three-phase, four-wire model. It is rated 13.75 kV with an operating pressure of 140 psig. The boiler has a steam capacity of 102,000 lbs./h. It is manufactured by CAM Industries of Kent, Wash. It is operated at pre-determined maximum demand loads during lower rate electric hours. This minimizes unit electric costs. The boiler's flexibility allows the fossil fuel fired units to take the hourly and daily load swings. Seattle Steam's diversity of fuels and fluctuating load conditions allow the unit to operate at constant maximum for every hour of the month--particularly during summer months.
