Coupling of carrier signal from power line

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6435767
A circuit is described coupling an RF carrier signal into a signal utilization circuit from an AC power line supplying an electric discharge lamp circuit including ballast means for limiting the current through the lamp. It comprises: an inductive device having a high current capacity winding coupled to the power line and connected in series with at least a portion of the electric discharge lamp circuit. The inductive device develops across its winding a signal proportionate to the RF signal, the inductive device presents a low capacitive impedance to the RF carrier signal; resistive means coupled to the inductive device causing it to present to the power line a terminating impedance higher than the characteristic impedance of the power line. The terminating impedance has a value selected so that a minimum or threshold voltage appears at any point along the power line of a sufficient value to assure development by the inductive device of the signal proportionate to the RF carrier signal; and means coupling the proportionate RF carrier signal developed across the inductive device into the signal utilization circuit.
