Thermal-recovery operations mushroom across Texas

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)

Texas oil men, in the past 2 yr, have launched 35 new firefloods and steam projects aimed at recovering heavy oil. This impressive gain in thermals, mainly steam, points up the confidence that operators are gaining from present techniques. While only a few projects in the state are known to be commercial, many of the new ones could create a breakthrough in technology that would send thermal output soaring. An accompanying table gives the following data for the 35 projects: field name, county, operator, and status. Of those projects approved from 1964-1966, 23 are steam and 12 are firefloods. The steam projects will use tried-and-proved huff-and-puff or steam drive. Conventional techniques, except for variations in igniting the pay and rates of air injection, will be used for the firefloods.
