Those worrisome technology exports

Technology has long been one of the most important American exports. It contributes to economic development around the world and brings U.S. companies a stream of revenue in the form of license fees and royalties. For years, with the exception of exports to Communist countries that involve national-security considerations, this expanding outflow of technology stirred little controversy. Today, U.S. businessmen are beginning to worry that the U.S. is exporting too much technology for its own good. Overall, in 1977, the nation took in $2.95 billion in fees and royalties on transfers of technology--quite an increase from the $666 million in 1965. Businessmen are now concerned that a log of foreign products incorporating technology acquired from the U.S. are beating out American products in markets around the world--including the U.S. itself. Because of this, U.S. manufacturers are harvesting too little of the return from their own innovations.
