Trans-Austria line delivers Soviet gas to Italian grid

The 481-mile Trans-Austria pipeline delivering Soviet gas from Baumgarten, Austria (near the Czech border), to Seregno, Italy, is not only the second long-distance pipeline supplying imported gas to the Italian network but also the 2nd largest natural gas line in western Europe. More than 2 years under construction, the system includes 3 diameters of pipe (34, 36, and 38 in.) and 7 wall thicknesses. Stream crossings numbered 90 in Austria and over 150 in Italy. A special problem was presented at the March River crossing where the line enters Austria: Czech guards prohibited the Austrian contractor personnel from setting foot ashore; consequently, supervision and preparation for the pull was performed by men in small boats which were not allowed to be beached and had to remain several feet from shore. The Italian portion included 9 tunnels with a combined length of 5 1/2 miles. Four compressor stations have been constructed on the system - at Baumgarten, Grafendorf, and Unterberg, Austria; and at Castelfranco Vento, Italy. One measurement station is at Baumgarten on the Austrian-Czech border, another near the Italian-Austrian.
