Construction of the 1550-mile, 48-in Trans-Mediterranean gas pipeline progressed past Rome en route to northern Italy. The central section of the mainland route advanced from Benevento, some 30 miles northeast of Naples, via a winding route northward past Rome to Civita Castellana, about 25 miles north of Rome, and then northward some 200 miles to Minerbio. The 146-mile central section is routed through widely varying terrain, ranging from rolling farmland to some hilly and rocky areas that require continuous ripping, drilling, and blasting for the pipeline ditch. Work on the remaining line will continue into early 1983, when the entire system is expected to be completed. Compressor stations in Tunisia, Sicily, and on the mainland are nearing completion; construction is underway or completed on laterals and gas distribution systems in regions that will be supplied by the pipeline.
