It is common in the refining of coal tar to sample the naphthalene fraction once or twice per shift and adjust the column operating conditions to optimize the naphthalene recovery. In this work, an instrument that measures the concentration of the naphthalene in the stream every 45 min. was connected to an automated control system for the control of the column. The adoption of this system permitted a decrease in the losses of naphthalene with the wash oil fraction by 2.5% and a resulting increase in the coefficient of naphthalene extraction.
