A galvanic cell is described comprising a coiled electrode assembly housed in a conductive container having a base with an upstanding wall defining an open end and closed by a cover. The coiled electrode assembly comprises a first electrode, a second electrode superimposed on the first electrode and a separator disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode and over at least one of the first and second electrodes. The first electrode, second electrode and separator spirally are wound such that the first electrode is electronically insulated from the second electrode by the separator and a portion of the first electrode is exposed to define at least a portion of the outer wall of the coiled electrode assembly. A portion of the second electrode is exposed to define at least a portion of the inner wall of the coiled electrode assembly.
