Stepwise reduction of CO to CH/sub 4/ on a triosmium cluster face. Preparation and characterization of Os/sub 3/(CO)/sub 11/CH/sub 2/

Numerous mechanistic schemes have been proposed for the metal-surface-catalyzed reduction of CO to yield hydrocarbons. This paper describes the reaction of (Os/sub 3/(CO)/sub 11/(CHO))/sup -/ with phosphoric acid which yields the new methylene cluster Os/sub 3/(CO)/sub 11/CH/sub 2/, a mimic for the surface intermediate in the CH/sub 4/ synthesis. Results demonstrated the stepwise reduction of CO to CH/sub 4/ on a cluster face and showed that hydrogenation of surface-bound carbenes is a reasonable path for the production of hydrocarbons. (DLC)
