Synthesis of alkyl and aryl derivatives of closo-B{sub 12}H{sub 12}{sup 2{minus}} by the palladium-catalyzed coupling of closo-B{sub 12}H{sub 11}I{sup 2{minus}} with Grignard reagents

The reaction of [N(n-C{sub 4}H{sub 9}){sub 4}]{sub 2}[closo-B{sub 12}H{sub 11}I], [N(n-Bu){sub 4}]{sub 2}[2], with Grignard reagents, RMgX, in the presence of catalytic amounts of trans-Pd(PPh{sub 3}){sub 2}Cl{sub 2} and CuI in either tetrahydrofuran or 1,4-dioxane solution produced the corresponding alkylated or arylated polyhedral borane anions, closo-B{sub 12}H{sub 11}R{sup 2{minus}}, in good yield. By this method, the authors have synthesized [N(n-C{sub 4}H{sub 9}){sub 4}]{sub 2}[closo-B{sub 12}H{sub 11}CH{sub 3}], [N(n-Bu){sub 4}]{sub 2}[3]; [N(n-C{sub 4}H{sub 9}){sub 4}]{sub 2}[closo-B{sub 12}H{sub 11}C{sub 6}H{sub 5}], [N(n-Bu){sub 4}]{sub 2}[4]; and Cs{sub 2}[closo-B{sub 12}H{sub 11}(n-C{sub 18}H{sub 37})], Cs{sub 2}[5]. The structures of Cs{sub 2}[3] and PPN{sub 2}[4] have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies.
