Infrared studies of single-crystal La/sub 2-//sub x/Sr/sub x/CuO/sub 4-//sub delta/ and YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-//sub delta/

Polarized infrared reflectance measurements are reported for crystals of La/sub 2-//sub x/Sr/sub x/CuO/sub 4-//sub delta/ and YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-//sub delta/. Free-carrier reflectance is observed in the copper oxide planes, and strong phonons are observed in the perpendicular direction. The interpretation of the infrared optical properties is discussed.
