Getting the most out of Prudhoe Bay

Sohio and its partners hope to prolong the productive life of Prudhoe Bay's oil fields into the 1990s and beyond by using alternative technologies that will allow more oil to be produced than the economically recoverable estimates. Sohio believes it can produce two billion more than the 9.6 billion barrels of recoverable oil, 3.5 billion of which have already been produced by primary recovery. Secondary and tertiary recovery will require more sophisticated and expensive techniques, such as the Waterflood Project, the Miscible Gas Project, and a procedure called WAG (water alternating gas). 3 figures.
