The biggest waterflood project in the US history leaped a major hurdle in Aug. 1983 when a mammoth barge-mounted STP was docked permanently at Alaska's giant Prudhoe Bay oil field. The plant represents many engineering and construction firsts. Delivering and installing the plant offered unprecedented challenges. The STP, cornerstone of a $2-billion waterflood project to boost ultimate recovery of oil from Prudhoe Bay field, features advanced engineering. The STP is designed to handle 2 million bpd of water from the Beaufort Sea as part of the field-wide waterflood to boost Prudhoe Bay oil recovery by approximately one-billion barrels. The waterflood in turn is part of a vast $10.5-billion program to maintain Prudhoe's 1.5-million bpd output and hike ultimate recovery. The plant is scheduled for start-up by 1984.
