Results of a steamdrive pilot project in a German oil field

Production from the aquifer adjoining area of the Ruehlertwist field is governed by pressure maintenance due to water influx, assisted by reinjection of produced water just downdip of the oil-water contact in the north of the structure. Resulting from the high in situ viscosity of the 25 API crude in this area only 22% of STOIIP have been recovered. A pilot test was performed to investigate steam injection under water-drive conditions in this highly watered-out part of the field. In Dec. 1978 steam injection into Rt 208 well was started. The second well, Rt 56, began with steam injection in April 1979. The 580,000 sq m pilot areas contained 2.655 million cu m STOIIP. By the end of Feb. 1983 ca 1,080,000 cu m steam (32.8% PV) had been injected into the reservoir. During the 4 yr, recovery due to steam flooding has increased up to 8% of the STOIIP. This work describes the reservoir, the project facilities and the pilot project performance.
