Production from the aquifer adjoining area of the Ruehlertwist field is governed by pressure maintenance due to water influx, assisted by reinjection of produced water just downdip of the oilwater contact in the north of the structure. Resulting from the high in-situ viscosity (175 m Pa.s) of the 25/sup 0/ API crude in this area only 22 % of STOIIP have been recovered. Therefore, it was decided by the partners (BEB, Deilmann AG, PreuBag AG and Wintershall AG as operator) to perform a pilot test for investigation of steam injection under water-drive conditions in this highly watered-out part of the field. In Dec. 1978 steam injection into Rt 208 Well was started. The second Well Rt 56 began with steam injection in April 1979. The 580,000 m/sup 2/ pilot area contained 2.655 MM m/sup 3/ STOIIP. By the end of February 1983 about 1,080,000 m/sup 3/ steam (32.8 % pore volume) have been injected into the reservoir. During the period of four years the recovery due to steam flooding has increased up to 8 % of the STOIIP. This paper describes the reservoir, the project facilities and the pilot project performance. Conclusions drawn from the pilot performance are going to be considered for future production strategy.
