Using the Stopped Muon Channel at LAMPF to produce a surface muon beam, 2.3 x 10/sup 12/ muons were stopped in a 50 mg/cm/sup 2/ target. The solid angle-efficiency product of the detector for the rare decay ..mu../sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/..gamma.. was 1.2%. Hence, 3 x 10/sup 10/ ..mu../sup +/ decays were examined. There is no indication of any signal, the data being consistent with a small background of random electron and gamma coincidences. The new upper limit on the branching ratio is GAMMA(..mu../sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/..gamma..)/GAMMA(..mu../sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/..nu../sub e/..nu../sup -//sub mu/) < 2 x 10/sup -10/ with 90% confidence. 8 references.1
