The rate of decomposition of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) substantially increases in the presence of organoaluminum compounds (OAC) and in an OAC medium. In these systems, not only thermal, but also catalytic decomposition takes place. The catalytic decomposition event is preceded by the complexation of AIBN with OAC. In solvents containing heteroatoms, no catalytic decomposition of AIBN is observed. The decomposition of AIBN in the presence of OAC proceeds by a free-radical mechanism. The primary isobutyronitrile radicals initiate the polymerization of the vinyl monomers and react highly selectively with the OAC. The rate of the reaction of the isobutyronitrile radicals with OAC sharply decreases on transition from triethyl-aluminum to mono- and diethylaluminum chlorides. In the presence of OAC, the gaseous decomposition products of AIBN contain nitrogen, ethane, and ethylene. An increased molar ratio of hydrocarbons to nitrogen in the case of the AIBN-triethyl-aluminum systems, indicates the occurrence of a chain-like, free radical condensation of OAC.
