The best method of measuring the thickness of aluminum sheets is to calculate it from the absorption of a beam of X rays through the material. This method provides the real-time measurement required for the control of high-speed rolling mills. When the sheets are more than 100/[mu]m thick, the X-ray energy required is above 9 key. At this energy, the absorption varies dramatically with the alloy composition of the aluminum. These variations can cause significant errors in the calculated thickness.
