Abstraction of sulfonates and dodecane by alumina

The effect of oil on the adsorption of isomerically pure n-Na dodecylbenzene-sulfonate and n-Na decylbenzenesulfonate on alumina and the uptake of oil by the solid were determined as a function of surfactant concentration, ionic strength and temperature. While the oil was found not to affect the sulfonate adsorption appreciably under experimental conditions studied, the uptake of oil as a function of sulfonate exhibited a decrease and in some cases followed by an increase. The results are discussed in terms of surfactant micellization and salting out, co-adsorption of oil at the solid/liquid interfaceand the solubilization of oil in micelle. 15 refs.
