Multiprocessor supercomputers for scientific/engineering applications
A description is given of the functions and applications of supercomputers, which are seen as playing a major role in advancing human civilization. However, with continuously increasing demands regarding the size of the computational tasks, an enhancement of supercomputer performance becomes vital. In order to satisfy this requirement, various approaches have been employed. Supercomputers are structured in three architectural classes, including pipelined computers, array processors, and multiprocessor systems. All these structures make use of parallel processing in different forms. Multiprocessor systems have the most flexible computer architecture in exploiting arbitrarily structured parallelism. Attention is given to supercomputing in science and engineering, multiprocessing supercomputers, exploratory research multiprocessors, scientific/engineering explorations, and future directions. 43 references.
