Lead removal from radioactive vessels using a mobile robot

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6412947
The Robotics Development Group at the Savannah River Laboratory (SRL) has developed and implemented a technique for removing lead counterweights from highly radioactive ion exchange vessels using a large teleoperated mobile robot and custom design tooling. The ion exchange vessels or deionizers present both a radiation and a contamination hazard and therefore the lead cannot be removed manually by plant personnel using hand tools. Remote handling and manipulation techniques using a mobile robot and pneumatically operated power tools have been used to successfully remove lead from 10 deionizer vessels. 6 figs.
