Mixed-mode phase-locked quantum-well laser arrays

The fabrication and characterization of a new type of phase locked laser array that displays narrow, single-lobe far-field patterns is reported. The new array achieves phase-locking through coupling by diffraction in a central section where the propagating eigenmodes are unguided. The light is guided in parallel-element waveguides on either side of the central mode mixing region.
