Natural gas pipeline adds efficiency to older gas system

Journal Article · · Pipe Line Ind.; (United States)

This article discusses a 56 million dollar pipe line replacement project in southwestern Iowa by the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America. Ten horizontal engines were replaced, half of them more than fifty years old, with three efficient, fuel-saving, 5,500hp vertical engines. The new engines will save the company about $450,000 yearly in fuel costs and will reduce maintenance expenses. 46 miles of 53-year-old 24 inch mechanical couple line pipe was retired and about eleven miles of new 36 inch pipe was installed near the Iowa-Illinois border. All of the new pipe was double jointed before stringing. The company plans to retire the horizontal engines used at two of its compressor stations as well as completing the pipe line replacement program in Illinois and Iowa, replacing 24 inch pipe in eastern Nebraska and retiring two more intermediate stations in Iowa and Nebraska.
