Nuclear effects in deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. D; (United States)
The ratio of the structure function F/sub 2//sup A/(x) of a nucleus A to that of deuterium F/sub 2//sup D/(x) is computed for A = Fe, Al, /sup 12/C, and /sup 4/He. The difference between scattering off free and bound nucleons is explained by a fraction g of the valence quarks of nuclear matter moving effectively in bags of doubled size (e.g., ..cap alpha..'s). The difference between European Muon Collaboration and SLAC data is attributed to the different effective quark mass, which is close to zero at -q/sup 2/ = 100 GeV/sup 2/, but 140 +- 25 MeV, at <-q/sup 2/> = 3 GeV/sup 2/. A cluster probability of g = 15% (10%) fits the Fe (Al) data quite well.
