Quark-pair contribution in deep-inelastic lepton--nucleon scattering

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., D; (United States)
A modified quark--parton model is considered. We assume a nucleon is composed of valence quarks and gluons. Quark pairs are produced via gluon--photon (or gluon--intermediate vector boson) interactions, which replace the ''sea'' contribution of a conventional quark--parton model. The theory has logarithmic q/sup 2/ violation of scaling for the structure functions. The model predictions are compared with recent experimental data from Fermilab. Charmed-hadron--production effects on the structure functions are considered in the standard model with the SU(4) x SU(3)/sub color/ symmetry group. The contribution is approx. 10% at x < or = 0.1, several percent at x between 0.1 and 0.25, and less than 1% at x > or , 0.25 for Q/sup 2/ between 10 and 50 GeV/sup 2/. (AIP)
