Practical energy management for the little guy. [Modular system for small-to medium-sized business]

Energy manager Alfred Worden (ex-astronaut) describes in an interview his energy philosophy and activities collaborating with the Bowmar Instrument Corp. to develop an energy-management system. Future customers will benefit from the development of a management package that includes every step from design to service. Basic to the systems will be a unit that is in daily interaction with the owner or manager through a desk computer that can control all building variables. The computer control is then interfaced with remote units as needed, with a closed loop for two-way communication. Worden stresses the human factor involved in energy management, as well as the technical, by including employee training and motivation in the package. The modular system uses building power lines and is simple to install. This plus a two-year payback will simplify marketing. Although the present package is designed for the small-to medium-sized business, Worden plans later to approach the residential market.
