Fluoride air pollution: a threat to plants
Book
·
OSTI ID:6405592
The effects of fluoride pollution on various plants are discussed. In some plants the leaf discolors inward toward the midvein. In others, the injury first appears at the leaf tip, then spreads down the leaf. Some plants are more sensitive to fluoride injury than others. Many plants are severely injured by prolonged exposure to small amounts of fluoride, while others are damaged by shorter exposure to higher concentrations. Plants exposed to fluoride in the air accumulated fluorine as long as they are alive and growing. Fluorine content of foliage increases as the source of fluoride pollution is approached. A greater hazard than direct injury to plants is the possible harmful effect on animals which eat plants that have absorbed fluoride.
