A number of small, easy to install, solid-state meters are becoming available as more building owners and industrial users submeter in order to allocate costs and promote conservation. Some firms are also introducing portable solid-state meters that work directly with existing electromechanical units. Billing tennants or departments in an industrial plant for the amount of electricity they actually consume discourages unnecessary or careless consumption, and allows typical savings of 15 to 35% or more. A directory lists over 40 major suppliers of meters and monitors.
