The unusual nature of the structure of the major components of a large fossil-fuel steam generating plant and the heavy cost of construction at the present time suggests that a dynamic analysis is in order to determine if current design practice is satisfactory. The plant under study is Unit No. 3 of the Paradise Kentucky Plant of TVA. This is a 1200 MW coal-fired unit which supplies high pressure steam to the turbine at 3600 psi and 1005F and reheated steam returns to the turbine at 800 psi and 1000F. The plant consumes approximately 15,000 tons of coal per day. This study devises detailed models of the major components suitable for dynamic analysis. Results for natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are presented. In addition, seismic responses for the steam pipe and chimney are obtained by using the El Centro earthquake record.
