Cation and anion diffusivities in the lattice and along grain boundaries have been measured on sintered polycrystals of Cr[sub 2]O[sub 3] and Cr[sub 2]O[sub 3]-0.09 weight percent Y[sub 2]O[sub 3] at 1100 C and at the oxygen partial pressure corresponding to that of the Cr/Cr[sub 2]O[sub 3] equilibrium at that temperature. Results show the effect of Y is to enhance cation grain boundary diffusion. It was also observed that under the same conditions, anion diffusion is significantly faster than cation diffusion. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for the reactive element effect on high temperature oxidation of chromia forming alloys.
